New Feature: Camera Ready Art
Take a Peek And Let Us Know What You Think
Click the above link and explore the set up of our new web pages that will allow you to download the actual printing files for a host of Department of Health (DOH) materials. Remember, this is only a test. We want your comments and reactions to the page layout, navigation and instructions. In order to view the PDFs you must have
Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. This is a free viewer available at the Adobe web site.Right now, there are only a few publications available so we can do some testing. There will be 33 subject headings corresponding to the same ones in the DOH Health Education Publications Catalog. The goal is to include all DOH education materials. Please take a few minutes to review these new pages. Call or send an email with your feedback. Once we have finished testing and making refinements we will provide an active link under the materials section of the web site.
Please let us know if there are any camera-ready DOH materials you would like to have available right away. You can send your comments to
HERE@doh.wa.gov or contact a member of the H.E.R.E. Team at 360-236-3736.
Social Marketing Consultation Available
As part of an effort to ensure the success of social marketing in public health programs, the National Training Collaborative for Social Marketing recently certified experts in four states to serve as consultants for state and local projects. Dorothy Gist and Don Martin in the Washington Department of Health Office of Health Promotion (OHP) were recognized as leaders in the field along with health department staff from California, Texas and Arkansas. They are available to answer questions, offer suggestions and recommendations, and review plans for social marketing projects that have received CDC funding. To request consultation, contact Dorothy (dorothy.gist@doh.wa.gov) or Don (don.martin@doh.wa.gov) and briefly describe your project and the help you need.
The national collaborative is based at the University of South Florida (USF) and supported by CDC and the Association of Schools of Public Health. USF is a leading advocate for social marketing practice and sponsors an excellent, week-long national conference every June in Clearwater near Tampa. Heidi Keller, Office Director for OHP, is a trainer for the national collaborative. The collaborative also maintains a 13-part web-based training module on social marketing, "Thinking Like a Marketer," including links to more in-depth resources: www.hsc.usf.edu/CFH/ntcsm/index.htm. The 15-minute lectures in this module are a good way to bone up on specific points in the social marketing process. Dorothy and Don can also answer questions about the online training module or provide a copy on CD-ROM.

H.E.R.E. Toolbox
The Health Educator's Toolbox contains a collection of practical tips and guidelines in short, easy-to-use formats.
We haven't added to the toolbox for a while, so we are happy to announce a new document on
Coordinated School Health Education. This 4-page paper discusses the importance of health education for all ages of school children, and lists the eight basic components and key elements that can make a coordinated school health program exemplary. It also provides additional resources and some statistics on the health of children in the U.S. that could be affected by school health programs. The H.E.R.E. team is planning to expand the usefulness of our toolbox by providing links to other web resources from inside the toolbox. We hope to save you time by finding resources that are reliably researched and user friendly. One such resource is the
University of Kansas Community Toolbox. Please let us know of any useful sites you have bookmarked – tools that would help someone build their health education skills.
Mentor of the Month
Elaine Engle

Elaine is the director of the Health Promotion Unit of the Spokane Regional Health District. In addition to health education/promotion this unit includes injury prevention, chronic disease, adolescent health, physical activity, WIC, HIV/AIDS, senior nutrition, oral health and environmental health education. She earned her BS in Physical Education with a minor in Health Education from Eastern Illinois University, and her MS in Teaching with emphasis in Health Education from Portland State University.
Elaine taught at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Health Education Department and served as faculty advisor of Eta Sigma Gamma (1985-1988). While in Nebraska she was appointed by Governor Bob Kerry to the five- member Nebraska Library Commission, which is responsible for oversight of the state library system.
We asked Elaine what words of advice she wishes she had received during her first year in public health. She replied wryly, "That my job would never be done, there would never be enough money to provide the needed services and what we actually do in public health daily is little understood by our community." Elaine believes that health educators do make a difference in the lives of those we work with even though we may not have the opportunity to prove it. She says, "People can and do change behaviors to positively affect their lives. Health educators are one important part of that process." Securing stable funding for existing programs and developing new efforts to meet needs identified by the community are future challenges Elaine sees for public health. Continuing challenges are gaining community support for efforts that are controversial or that use effective but unproven methodologies. Elaine enjoys dancing, cross-country skiing, gardening and traveling. Elaine can talk with you about internships, volunteer experiences and job opportunities at Spokane Regional Health District. She can also offer perspectives and experiences from over 20 years in health promotion and 16 years in public health. Elaine can be reached by email at
