New Social Marketing Book
Features State Programs

Social Marketing is becoming a commonly used approach in health promotion and environmental education projects and campaigns, but not too long ago it was a little known term. Those of us who started using social marketing in the 90s cut our teeth on the 1989 Phillip Kotler/Eduardo Roberto text Social Marketing: Strategies for Changing Public Behavior. Many still point to the Kotler text as among the best for describing social marketing—what it is and how to do it right.

So it’s understandable that the second edition of this book is causing a stir in public health and environmental circles, with the added attraction being that the book has a strong connection to Washington state.

Seattle-based professor and consultant Nancy Lee, who has worked with DOH and several other public agencies providing training, research and campaign development, is the lead author of the new edition, Social Marketing: Improving the Quality of Life. Lee worked with Kotler and Roberto to rewrite the text and provide more than 25 in-depth cases illustrating core principles described in each chapter.

Included in these case studies are several homegrown projects:

This book may be the most practical and illustrative text on social marketing to date. The fact that the work of health professionals in our state is featured so prominently alongside projects of national acclaim gives us the right to be proud. The book is available from Sage Publications, ISBN 0-7619-2434-5, in paperback.

Public Health Grand Rounds
WebCasts

University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill

The School of Public Health at UNC facilitates grand round discussions on emerging issues in public health twice a year via satellite. In public health grand rounds, the "patient" is defined as the community and the "presenting problem" is defined as a public health issue challenging the community. As in medical grand rounds, a panel of specialists is assembled to provide the most current information and to assess the problem from their professional perspective, knowledge and experience. The idea is to promote a national dialogue on public health issues of strategic significance. The most recent grand round was titled "Urban Sprawl: What’s Health Got to Do With It?" On June 7, 2002 there will be a new discussion on obesity.

Washington has several satellite broadcast locations in place around the state. Torie Hernadez from the Public Health Training Network (this link has other broadcast trainings available) at DOH can assist you in locating a site or in setting up your location for a satellite broadcast. If you can’t participate, the discussions are available afterwards on the web at www.publichealthgrandrounds.unc.edu/pastprograms.htm, along with previous grand rounds. (You will need Real Player installed on your computer.)

Updates to the H.E.R.E. Databases

Every two years the H.E.R.E. team asks local and state programs to review their community projects and educational materials entries to make sure the information is accurate and current. We are in the middle of this biennial update right now and it's a big task, with several hundred entries in each database. If you have received a mailing from us in the last few weeks, please take a few minutes to check through the entries and let us know if we need to change anything. We appreciate for your time and support.

Mentor of the Month
Cindy Gleason

Cindy Gleason is a health educator with the DOH Immunization Program. She graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a BS in Outdoor Recreation Management and a specialization in Environmental Education.

Cindy started out as a Park Ranger, including a stint at the Olympic National Park among others. Her career with the State of Washington began at the state Conservation Commission, an agency that addresses the environmental impact of agricultural practices. She then worked at DOH in the Environmental Health Division, Hazardous Waste Section, for seven years before moving to Community and Family Health and the Immunization Program three years ago.

Cindy feels passionately about providing up-to-date, accurate and balanced information to the public that will enable them to make well-informed decisions about their health and that of their children. She says it is important to keep in mind that health education is not always as valued as it should be "for what it truly can do for a program. It is often an afterthought or put on the chopping block." She believes that "by knowing this, health educators can be prepared to defend and justify the benefits that our profession provides to public health programs." She believes it will continue to be a challenge to achieve recognition and just compensation for the value that trained health educators bring to the table.

Cindy enjoys spending time with her two teenagers, hiking, bicycling, playing softball and volleyball, singing in the church choir and other church activities, and gardening. Cindy has experience in community needs assessments, developing and pre-testing materials, web content development, working with the media, and group facilitation. She can be reached by email at Cindy.Gleason@doh.wa.gov or by phone at 360-236-3569.
